Amidst the reaction to Tumblr user Jack Buckby's text post 'I'd very much like to punch a feminist' I wrote two responses, which have so far not been replied to/posted/seemingly acknowledged.
Buckby posted that he would like the relevance of feminism explained so I sent this:
"A contemporary model of Western, developed world feminism questions to what extent cultures are geared towards supporting the strengths and requests of the male and ignoring those of the women as a consequence of a predominantly patriarchal society over the past centuries. This is relevant so as to allow women to develop in cultures they have only recently (last 50 years) been ‘allowed’ into that have been constructed predominantly for men."
Buckby also posted an anonymous response he appeared to agree with referring to feminism as a movement condoning sexism towards men/appealing for female superiority to which I responded with:
"Modern, Western feminists do not want for superiority, we ask for a culture in which women are allowed to be anyone they want to be, not just who we have been told we cannot be. Perhaps this desire to be more than a stereotype can be deemed as desire to be superior. However, it is of the male’s prerogative to do the same, it is important we are accepting of a man stepping into traditional female roles. Metaphorically, women are asking to have tits and cock, men are free to ask for this too."
In between these responses I also mentioned that there was only so much I could explain in the Ask box provided and there is indeed a great deal more to feminism than this. I also mentioned the importance of remembering that I was putting forth my own perspective thus I was not claiming my opinion to be absolute and universal.
I would like to add that I understand the complexity of universal feminism, it is moving at different stages globally and what I speak of in terms of modern, Western feminism may also be deemed as mostly white, middle class feminism. My opinion is not without bias (as is none) but I believe my responses above to be reasonable.
Neither of my responses have been acknowledged, which frustrates me as later Buckby claimed ’feminism has warped into a man hating machine and is no longer relevant’. I believe my responses contest this point of view in a fair and logical manner.
The original ‘I’d very much like to punch a feminist’ post has received roughly 34,000 notes (since I last checked) thus I understand Buckby will have received a great deal of responses. However, I believe it is clear Buckby holds little interest in constructing a valid, reasoned opinion on the matter as his opinion has remained unchanged while being informed of the realities of being a Western woman by myself and others (many of which have been unpublished/unread as suggested here and here). This is despite claiming those responding to him were ’ignorant sheep who apparently don’t question anything when presented with new evidence’.
It is important to note that Tumblr is a blogging platform created for freedom of expression and in this way all humans are entitled to an opinion which isn’t necessarily backed up. However, when one enters an argument with another it is important that such opinions are backed up and logical otherwise one must realise they are incorrect or concede in some manner - not continue to put forth an invalid and ignorant opinion.
I’m not sure Buckby realises to what extent he has made himself look a fool at the expense of his poorly considered words and cruel jokes. As the founder of the National Culturists organisation and member of the BNP, he has served to damage both organisations’ reputation in the eyes of the 34,000 plus Tumblr users aware of the incident. As a man who claims to be of intelligence I hope he would understand the consequences of his words in these situations and recognise the opportunity of listening to the voices in opposition with him rather than attempting to ignorantly shout over them.
